Before 2009, we invented WAH ! le journal du monde qui va bien (the newspaper of a world doing just fine), a small “anti-press” experiment that drew writers into loose, free mini-projects, together with the publisher è®e. An A3 sheet printed on both sides and folded in two, downloadable as a PDF and photocopied 1,000 times a day, handed out in local shops and at the Oberkampf and Parmentier metro exits. It featured the writers Chloé Delaume, Emily King, Hugues Jallon, Dominiq Jenvrey, Jean-Charles Massera and Eric Arlix, and the illustrators Jérôme Mulot, Florent Ruppert and François Olislaeger. The issues can still be read, and they are still just as WAH! : 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Love leads to all kinds of surprises. On 3 July 2009, we opened a bar on rue Neuve-Popincourt, near Oberkampf: udo. There was currywurst, German beer and sharp electronic music, and behind the counter with us, Thomas and his devilish shots of Jägermeister, handed to everyone who walked through the door. At the end of the night we pushed the tables aside to dance, sometimes right from the start. People lost clothes, their bad mood, a finger; we got up to all sorts of nonsense.
We also hosted improvisation sessions and live concerts there, which we then pressed on vinyl, co-produced with Dokidoki Éditions. That became Asper, four records up to 2014: Asper #1 with Noyade and Tomoko Sauvage, Asper #2 with Centenaire and Guido Möbius, Asper #3 with Lugano Fell and TG Gondard, Asper #4 with Candie Hank and Blenno die Wurstbrücke. The magic of the internet: even if the vinyls are sold out, everything can still be heard on Dokidoki's Bandcamp.
On 22 October 2010 came the opening of Access & Paradox at the Halle des Blancs-Manteaux, a fair for the emerging scene held off FIAC that we had helped to organise. Twenty-five curatorial projects, from works on the wall to monumental installations, brought together very young galleries, established ones and institutions showing their collections. We organised an afternoon devoted to sound installations and experimental music, and showed Agonizing Memories by Luc Kheradmand.
On 1 July 2011, udo turned two and the bar had become far too small to celebrate: we stepped outside our walls for the first udo party, at la Java. Behind the decks, women and men, French and Germans: mixing it up was our guiding principle. We invited Jake the Rapper, Nizar, Jacques and Tite, plus a one-off performance by Rikslyd & Ylva Falk.
On 9 December we did it again for #2, still at la Java, with Acid Pauli, Dora-Diamant, Jacques, Tite and Alberto Balsalm.
On 21 April 2012, the Sntwn collective had the good idea of pairing us with Zéro Zéro, the bar on rue Amelot where hanging out had made us want to open udo in the first place, for a joint night at Point Éphémère.
On 23 July, udo turned three. Because we found it ecstatic, romantic, sexy, animal and communist, we went back to la Java with The Sorry Entertainers (DJ set), Crame, Jacques and Tite.
On 18 January 2013, to start this post-apocalyptic year, udo invited everyone to wake up the porn star sleeping inside. Human warmth for all, over an electro-weird mix by Aurélie, Hrdvsion, Jacques Bon and Diis Paradiis, with the full udo crew, sexier than ever, to make the night orgasmic. And it was, once again, at la Java.
On 18 May came udo smash bros melee at la Villette: a night packed with guests, an attempt to bring together all our friends' collectives in Paris, in duels. Diis Paradiis vs Yulja, Xavier DDD (DDD Record Store) vs Jacques Bon (Smallville), JO55 vs Marc Sntwn, Fareed (Society Of Silence) vs Pawn Hearts (Bar65), Snowball (Exploration Music) vs Oxyd (Technorama), and John Merrick vs Pit Spector, both from Antislash.
On 5 June, udo turned four: four ecstatic, romantic, animal and sexy years. Joining us at la Java: RSS Disco, Jacques Bon, Diis Paradiis live and Crame.
And on 10 October, in the 11th arrondissement, right next to udo, we opened düo with Emeric Glayse: a restaurant, gallery and bookshop all at once. Maori Murota cooked there with the help of Ami Arwenn, Aaron Ayscough chose our wines and Joel Riff organised talks. An online notebook remains: duolovesyou.tumblr.com.
On 1 March 2014, we invited Florence Lucas to düo for a solo show: she presented Watch out for David.
Two days later, on 3 March, udo party #6 invited everyone to do the musical splits, crossing and uncrossing their legs to mixes by some of the best Paris collectives: JO55, Bagarr, DDD aka The Hustler, Jacques Bon and Nizar aka Niz Denox.
On 29 May, again at düo, we put together After with Yann Perol, a group show with Florian Bézu, Mireille Blanc, Remi Boinot, Nagi Gianni, Alain K, Thomas Lévy-Lasne, Niz Denox, Melchior Tersen and Yann Stofer.
On 6 July, udo turned five and summer had finally arrived. In our magic castle, we lovingly welcomed you to la Java, with Stil Eric, Lena Willikens, DDD aka The Hustler, Jacques Bon, Fleischer, Alberto Balsalm and Louis(e) de Ville.
On 9 December, with winter back, we turned la Java upside down for udo party #8, helped by the clever mixes of Sascii Dokidoki, Candie Hank aka Patric Catani (live), La Source DJs, Azf Ier & Parfait Guiguet and Wurstbrücke Povera Blenno (live). The udo crew, more wound up than ever, carried souls and bodies into an infernal trance.
In 2015, again with Yann Perol, we launched p0ster. For each issue, an invited artist reinvented the centrefold of the girlie magazines with a new work around sensuality, eroticism and pornography: a recurring date that was by turns romantic, funny or incisive; an image, an object, a text, a point of view. Each issue was printed in 500 copies, with a limited edition of 20 accompanied by a numbered and signed print. Gio Black Peter opened the series with Lick, followed by Nagi Gianni (Once more, close your eyes), Dorothée Smith (Une âme en incandescence), Ricci & Forte (Wunderkammer Soap #1 – DIDON), Tom de Pekin (Le coloriage au secours de l'ordre moral, le sport), Vladimir Besson, Thomas Lévy-Lasne (Webcam), Alain K (Night in white satin), Michel Scarpa (Couple holding hands), Blank (Le sortilège des Antilles) and, for the eleventh, Melissa Steckbauer (K&S). The posters are still on the p0ster Tumblr, and you can download them here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
On 30 June, udo celebrated its sixth birthday, the age of unreason at last. It was also its end: we had decided to go and rest in Germany. For this last night, we invited Mick Wills, Diis Paradiis, Pit Spector and Jacques Bon.
We didn't rest much. In March 2016, on Weichselstraße in Neukölln, we opened jaja, a natural wine bar.
On 11 August 2018, we felt like getting people dancing again: we brought some of our favourite DJs to Berlin for a night of clubbing. It was called La Java, and off we went again.
In 2021, we closed jaja. But in November, still in Berlin, we opened Return of the Living Wine for one year, a wine shop that doubled as a record shop. Its Instagram account is still there.
In 2022, with Yann Perol, we came up with Hic & Nunc, a publisher that doesn't publish books but files of art objects for 3D printers. It is a database that collects and lists new proposals by contemporary visual artists, open to everyone: you can download as much as you like, with no limit in number or time. The objects can be downloaded here, as .stl files ready to print: Allongé, Bastien se repose, Collision, Hugo répond à son crush, Jumelles, Moule, Nicolas et Louis attendent le bus, Poing, Silex, Stand, Thibault s'en grille une, Vénus and Viseur.
Since 2023, we have kept importing wine into Germany; we have teamed up with the restaurant Ernst and opened a new wine bar, ERNST Cave.
On 15 June 2025, with our friends from jaja and Julius, we put on Wine In The Garden, a wine fair with some fifteen winemakers in the magnificent Großer Garten.
We are also gathering our drawings from the world after to turn them into fanzines, under the name ladygagagosian: Drawings from the world after.
